Richard Schouten - Foundational Training for Horses and Humans - 919.200.1568 Connect:
Horses have been a part of my life since I can remember. I started out dreaming of all things cowboy and eventually competed in junior rodeos in the calf-roping event. In high school, I spent three summers as a Wrangler/trail guide in Big Bear, California. Later, I attended Feather River College in Northern California where I received a degree in forestry. During my college years I spent a lot of time in the saddle . My career as a Hot Shot with the US Forest service left me with little time for riding so I sold my horse.
I moved to North Carolina in 2004 and found myself once again surrounded by horses. I was first introduced to Natural Horsemanship through the Parelli program in 2006. Between 2009 and 2012 I spent more than 35 weeks at the Parelli Centers riding with Pat Parelli and his top instructors. I attained the status of 3 Start Instructor and Horse Development Specialist.
I left the Parelli program in 2012 and my wife and I started Remount Horsemanship. Together we are having fun building and running Remount Horsemanship together with our daughter Tessa and son Wyatt.
I work with challenging horses, starting young horses, trail ride, ride and train dressage and western dressage. The thing I truly love and am most passionate about is putting the foundational work on horses.
Laura is a scientist by day, my business partner the rest of the time, and you may see her at my clinics toting a camera! She has over 20 years of horse experience and much of that was riding saddleseat saddlebreds, morgans, and hackney ponies. Her show record includes wins at many notable saddlebred shows including world champion and world grand championship ribbons in the saddlebred five-gaited pony division. Laura also taught lessons and worked as an assistant trainer through college. Though no longer involved in saddleseat show world, she still has has a passion for “big moving” horses and is currently training Martini, a 2007 friesian x paint mare and Castano, a 2007 Lusitano gelding in Parelli natural horsemanship and dressage.
